MANAIA HOTELS VISITED

BREACHES ON CHRISTMAS EVE. EIGHT CONVICTIONS, OBTAINED. As the result of visits by the police to the hotels in Manaia on Christmas Eve eight convictions were obtained in the Hawera. Magistrate’s Court this morning against persons found oil the premises at a time when such premises were required to be closed. Charges were preferred against John Joyce. Harry Winters, Dick Ngatai and Francis A. Milner in respect of.their presence in the Commercial Hotel after hours, and against William Toro, Tuni E,pae, Mick Schicketyand William Gascoigne in respect of the Manaia Hotel. There was no appearance of any of the eight defendants. Formal evidence was given by Constable J. Scanned that he visited the two hotels shortly after 8.39 o’clock on the evening of December 24 and found the men in the bar. No excuse was offered.

Convictions were entered .by the magistrate (Mr J. H. Salmon) and a fine of £2 was imposed in each instance. ON HAWERA PREMISES. Albert James Bryant and Bedelia Agnes Bryant did not appear when their names were called in respect of charges that, on the evening of January ]., they were found on the Central Hotel premises in Hawera after licensed hours. Evidence was given that at 8.25 o’clock both defendants wore found at the entrance to the hotel, where they had gone to obtain liquor. Convictions were entered and fines of £2 were imposed. BREACHES! OF ORDERS. For a breach of his prohibition order at Normanby on January 20, Henrv Edward White was convicted and fined £3. Charged with procuring liquor for White, knowing him to be a< prohibited person. Bertie James Towers also was convicted and fined £3. For a breach of liis prohibition order at Hawera on January 2, Morris Stening was -convicted and ordered to nay costs. Defendant gave evidence that on returning to Hawera from Waitara bv train he had gone to the Railway Hotel to telephone for a taxi. Aniulication was made bv Mr J. Fdmonston. counsel for Stening, for the snnpression of bis client’s name, but this was refused by the magistrate. Tupara Tloi-i made no appearance when charged with a- .breach of his prohibition order at Hawera on Janu-ai-v 14. and after formal evidence was given a. conviction .was entered and a lino of £2 imposed.
