POLLING IN FREE STATE

UNEXPECTED PEACEFULNESS i FEW DISTURBANCES OCCUR ASSAILANT FLOORED BY MAYOR. INTIMIDATION OF VOTERS. (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph Copyright.) Received 2.30 p.m to-day. LONDON, Jan. 24. A steady stream of Free State rioters to the general election poll was experienced during the day. Few disorders occurred, though the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr. Byrnd, who is a small man, was the hero of a bout of fisticuffs at Dublin when an aggressive do Valeraite struck him while touring the polling booths. Mr. Byrnd retaliated and knocked his assailant down. Mr. E. de Yalcra spent the polling day in his constituency, Clard. Mr. AY. T. Cosgrave returned to Dublin from Cork escorted by members of the Free State Army in an armoured ear.

Some intimidation of Cosgraveites occurred in country districts and also a considerable number of impersonations of voters was noted while occasional attempts were made to put Cosgraveitc motor cars out of action by spreading nails on roads. Generally, however, a day of heavy polling concluded in unexpected peacefulness.
