FUTURE OF NEW ZEALAND
LORD BLEDISLOE HOPEFUL
DIFFICULTIES APPRECIATE®
(By Association.) LEVIN, Nov. 16'. There was no reason why the good dairy farmer should look depressed today,* said the Governor-General, Loro Bledisloe, in an address- here to-day. It was true that the level of prices of butter and cheese in Britain haa fallen but the good farmer by the application of scientific and more intensive methods was enabled to hold his own. He could obtain not a paltry 301 b of butter-fat to the- acre, which was the Dominion average, but 260 oi or even 3501 b per acre. He was well aware those engaged in producing meat and wool were- having a. very difficult time,” Lord Bledisloe said, “but these times will -surely pass away and will do so more quickly ii we have courage .and hope and are preoared to face realities.” He confessed that during the first six months of lii-s sojourn in New Zealand he was gravely concerned witl regard to the future of the Dominion and its solvency. He had no feme to-day, though ’the position was Cm worse than it was then, because tin oeople now realised the position, both in New Zealand and Britain. Prosoerity induced a certain measure o! extravagance and the people did not realise, the dangerous' trend on which they were embarked. To-day the- position was infinitely better, and largely because the Government had taken it; couragp in both hands and, however distasteful it might be, had made it dear that to avoid national insolvency and secure an early return to prosperity nations,' like business men. must do their business on business linos and be careful not to live beyond their means.
The whole country to-day had to concentrate on that —to stabilise the position without depending on borrow ed money. He was a confirmed optimist so far as the future of Neu Zealand was concerned.
