DOMINION TOMATO GROWERS
PROPOSAL FOR REGISTRATION
NOT FAVOURED BY CABINET
(By Association.)
WELLINGTON, Nov. 15
The Cabinet has decided that the 'Government is unable to sponsor the Tomato (growers’ Registration /Bill. It is understood certain members of the Cabinet are definitely hostile to the Bill, 'which was abruptly turned down when it came up for consideration. The only chance those desiring the measure now have of getting it before Parliament is to have it introduced by a private member, but. as private Bills will noT bo dealt with again this session the proposal can be regarded as definitely shelved.
The Bill proposed the registration of all growers with over 500 plants, who would be required to pay a,levy which would be used on organising the industry'. The Bill found favour with certain interests in the South Island. It was intended that it should be introduced in the House of Representatives this week, and the law draftsman prepa re'd the measure, which was then sent to the Cabinet, for approval.
