HAWERA MALE CHOIR

SEASON’S SECOND CONCERT INTERESTING PROGRAMME The series of numbers submitted at the second concert of the year for the Hawera. Male Choir was well up to the standard set in previous years and met the evident appreciation of a large audience in St. Mary’s Hall last night. The choir sang with nice expression and the balance and blend were particularly good in their soft numbers. The choir was well under the control of the conductor, Air Herbert Webb, and showed the good results of his careful training. The concert numbers included selections of different styles which gave full scope for the choir to show its best work. The numbers were “Who Sails with Drake,” ‘‘it’s Oil ! To be a. Wild Wind,” “Lullaby.” “The Banners Wave,” “Sleeping,” “Alartyrs of the Arena,” “The Noble Duke of York,” “The Sailors.’ Chorus,” and an amusing part song “1 am so Nervous.” On two occasions they were honoured with an encore.

The part song “Thou Art My Dream,” was one of the. most enjoyable, a humming accompaniment being given by the choir to a solo by Air B. Alalone. His voice stood out well and the choral, background created a nice effect.

A. feature of the evening was the singing of Gerald Hawthorne, a bov soprano with a voice of good quality and a remarkable range. He also showed a power of interpretation that helped to make his songs much appreciated. He sang “Where’er You Walk” (Handel) and “The Lass with a Delicate Air” (Avne), and delighted bis listeners, who recalled him on each occasion. He added “Fairy Pipers” and “Hark, Hark, the Lark.” I Miss Alary Massey, of Stratford, sang with excellent expression “Caro Nome” (Verdi) and “On Wings Of Song” (Alendelssolin). She was enthusiastically onoored and added “Spirit Flower,” “Clubs of Heaven,” “Angus AlcDonald,”. and “Home,, Sweet Home.”

The solo pianist was Mis;s Kathleen Fairhall, who gave a convincing interpretation of Chopin’s “Polonaise in G Sharp Afinor,”. showing a marked appreciation of the ideals of the composer. In response to a decided recall she added “The Afusical Box” (Rebikov) and “Berceuse”; (Palmgren). All* B. P. Bellringer, of New Plymouth, was the other soloist. He created a very good impression by his artistic singing. HTs numbers, were “Star of Eve” (Wagner) and “Angels Guard Thee” (Godard) and being emphatically enoorecl lie added “Absent,” “Coming Home,” “They Say” and “Florette.”

Mrs W. A. Quin was a, verv efficient accompanist to the choir, which owed her much for her uniformly good work. Aliss Fairhall and Aliss AY. Huggins played the accompaniments for the soloists.
