On Saturday next and Wednesday of the following week members of the Hawera Golf Club will take sides in a match, President versus Captain. TFi NGUTU CLUB. CLOSING DAY OF SEASON. Th c first season of the To Ngeiu Golf Club was brought to a successful conclusion yesterday when iherc was a large attendance' qf numbers of friends, with visitors from Ha-,vein. The "course was in good order chough the effect of the recent warm rains was a distinct call to the sport to cease for the summer sea,soil and the greens were playing remarkably well. The closing day competition, a Canadian foursome, was won bv Mrs. G. Prcece and T. Betts with a net score of 66. Other trap hies won during the season were: President’s (eclectic:). Miss Jackson ; opening day. Miss O’Sullivan and G. Ritchie. Mrs. R. Treweek and Oldfield; club trophies, M isses O’Sullivan and C. Sutherland; Mrs. Preece’s Mrs. Buxton; M)rs. Crocker’iq Miss Hutchinson; Mrs. Buxton’s, Miss Hutchinson; Mrs. Robertson’s, Miss E. O’Dowd; Mr Buxton’s (driving), Mrs. Robertson; men’s eclectic, G. Buxton; bogey, B. Barclay: flag. Stevenson; diiving, T. Betts; flag. J. C. Barclay; handicap, E. C. Eketts. The president Mr. J. E. Meuli cordially thanked the many donors of trophies* for their pi re at generosity, saying that the club .very much appreciated their action. He said he was very pleased to see Mrs. Harris, their lady patron, present on the closing day. The club owed very sincere
thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Harris and | the. Messrs. Harris brothers for their geneosity in giving them the use of i such excellent country for a golfing course. The links ' had improved out of all knowledge during the first season, thanks largely to the consistent work of the club captain, Mr. Stevenson and his committee, who were always keen to further the interests of the club and of the sport generally. They had spared no effort in making the position as sound as it was. “We have, too,” he added, “the best secretary we could wish, Mr. R. Treweek, a man who has given yeoman service at all times.” He congratulated the first champions of the club, Mrs. Robertson and D. Fitzgerald, wlm had richly deserved the honours they had gained and fie expressed the hope that an honours board woudl be put up in the clubhouse next year so that their names could be first inscribed thereon. Mr. Fitzgerald had promised a trophy of one dozen balls for the, opening day next year and for this he cordially thanked Sim. •‘We have reached the closing day,” said the president in conclusion, “and certainly have had a wonderful time and look forward confidently to the opening of next season which will be the forerunner of many more in the future.” Hearty cheers were then given for all who" had helped. 1 Mr. Treweek said it was a great pleasure to. be associated with the Te Ngutu Club and he assured members they were fortunate in having a president and committee who were out to further the interests of the club at all Limes. The president had done a tremop do us amount o;f work and was largely responsible for the harmonious relations subsisting in the club, difficulties always being liable to arise in any now club. All, however, had worked well together and the result had been that a great success had been secured. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. y COURSE RECORD Mr. George Ritchie set a course record last week-end when he returned a 68, all fours with the exception of two threes on each round.
