LOCAL AND PERSONAL

The fortnightly euchre party in aid of railway social hall improvements was held in Hawera last evening. There was a good attendance and prizes were won by Mrs. Mcßetli (17 games) first and Mrs. Foster (after playing off with Miss Tremaine in the final) second. Messrs Canning, Peters, Bell, Searle, and Campbell tied for the men’s prizes and in the play-off Messrs Campbell and Canning won first and second respectively. “Silent” prizes were won by Mrs. Foster and Mr. Hearne. Mr. Ai. Galloway, of Normanlby, has been offered by the New Plymouth Choral Society, an engagement to sing j the tenor solos in its performance of Hande'l’s “Judas Maccabeus.” The performance will take place on Tuesday, September 20. Miss Mary Massey (Stratford) and Mr. O. Trehey (New Plymouth) will be the other soloists.

The fourth ping pong tournament is to take place in St. Joseph’s Hall, Hawera, on Tuesday next and should be the most interesting of the popular series to date. A new event will be a competition for teams of six men. There will be a handicap singles for the ladies, and if time permits a combined doubles will be added.
