A Press Association message from Pasadena, California, states that Dr. Leonard Thompson Troland, aged 42 years, a noted scientist of Harward University and the inventor of the colouring 'processes for motion pictures, was killed to-day through a fall over a 250 foot cliff on Mount Wilson.

A pleasant surprise party wa,s giren Mr. and Airs T. Trask, at Olia Ave on Friday evening. Euchre was played tall 11 p.m., Mrs Ryan winning the ladies prize and Mr Myers the men’s. Daneing and games were indulged in till the email hours, when Mr Hugh den, on behalf of the visitors, expressed good wishes to AD and Airs Trask. _ Air Trask suitably responded and a jolly party concluded Avith ( ‘Auld Lang Syne” and “For They are Jolly Good Fei lows.”

The Self Help dub established iu Ilawcra Avith a membership of 150 registered unemployed made its weekly distribution of meat from the Victoria Street depot this morning. Adjutant 11. AlcKenzie, of the Hawera Salvation Army Corps, was in charge of the docket issue and two butchers were engaged cutting up to the requirements of callers. There was an early queue, but the men filed through one by one in orderly manner when the premises opened. Each member of the elub pays a AA’eekly subscription of Id to meet incidental expenses. Stock is purchased at auction and slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs under Government inspection, being cut and sold only to members. Prices are practically at cost with a small charge to cover killing fees and cartage. The club is entirely self supporting and the men speak highly of the excellent work performed by Adjutant McKenzie.

Tributes to the good work done by Mr George Ford for the Boys and Girls’ Clubs’ Association were paid by the chairman (Air J. R. Corrigan) and members of the executive at to-da'y’s meeting of the association. Sincere regret Avas expressed that, owing to Airs Ford’s health, ho found it necessary to leave South Taranaki for the South Island. The chairman said he felt they should aeknoAA’ledge in some concrete way the debt tliey OAved to Mr Ford and a A r ery cordial vote of thanks was passed by acclamation. Air Rod Symc recalled that Air Ford had for nine years taken part in the judging of calves and latterly had used his own car and had contributed useful weekly notes to help the clubs. After others had spoken Air F'ord suitably replied.
