WELLINGTON, Slay 26. Regulations gazetted to-night relate to the postal charges to take effect from June 1. The letter rate is restored to' a penny for the first ounce and £d tor each additional ounce. The postcards rate will be a halfpenny and the registration fee 3d. The rates for packet and book .post parcels, etc., are similarly reduced. Commenting on the reductions the Hon. Adam Hamilton said this was in accordance with the Government’s desire to reduce costs wherever possible. In doing so the Government might be sacrificing a certain ariiOiiiit Of ’ revenue, but it was hoped that the public generally would respond to the action taken and make the fullest possible use of the Post Office service. The Postal Department was owned by the .public and waS conveying mails at the cheapest possible rate, and it was desirable thdt the department should continue to be the sole nieans of conveying mails. “The Government feels that the reduction to penny postage will he welcomed by the public as- a contribution toward the teauction of ports and encouragement of business throughout New Zealand,” the Minister said. “In making this concession it asks the 'public in return to make . full use of the postal facilities and thus hfiable the, charges to eohtirjiie on the lowest possible basis.” BULK PETROL TANKS. PLANS FOR FOUR CENTRES. WELLINGTON, May 26. The Associated Motorists’ Petrol Company, Ltd., has let tenders for the construction of bulk petrol tanks in the four centres having an aggregate capacity of more than 3,000,000 gallons. The successful tenderers tor the taiiks-in the respective cities are Heffernan and Co., Auckland; the Fletcher Construction Co., Wellington; Andefsons, Ltd.. Christchurch; Dunedin Engineering Co., Dunedin. The work will commence immediately.
