DEAN OF HAMILTON
TEMPORARY ARRANGEMENT. BISHOP ASSUMING DUTIES. With the approval of the chapter and standing committee of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Bishop Cherrington has decided to carry on the duties of Dean of Hamilton when the resignation of Dean G. R. Barnett takes effect. “In view of the fact that at present the finances of St. Peter’s are not satisfactory, I have decided to make no appointment at present,” Bishop Cherrington said on Thursday. “I say ‘at present’ because the fact that within a month £l6O has been contributed by members of the congregation and parish for various purposes speaks volumes for the generosity of lovers of our church.”
The bishop said that when the dean’s resignation took effect he would assume responsibility for the cathedral and parish generally in order to allow the chapter to use all funds available to pay off outstanding debts and mortgages- as soon as possible. He would do this with such assistance as the chapter would reasonably be able to afford. He was desirous that the clergyman who might later be appointed dean should come to a parish unhampered bv debts, and with an income assured to provide for at least two assistant priests.
