MAORI MISSIONS
HAWERA CHURCH APPEAL. At St. Alary’s Church, Hawera. yesterday appeals on behalf of the Maori missions were made at the morning and evening .services and the offerings were devoted to that cause. , At the evening service the vicar, Rev. J. R. Young, took the text for xiis address from St. John, chapter 15. verse 16. He pointed out that, in spite of what we are, and hot for what we consider our virtues, God chooses us to do his work—to be of service to others. Especially had the British people been chosen by him to do service among the coloured races—in this country to lead the Maoris, to knowledge of their Heavenly Father and •Jesus Christ their Saviour. In spite of ill-considered beginnings and the bad example of many white people this work has been of recent years increasing rapidly in value. Unfortunately, just at the time when financial support was urgently needed, the earthquake destroyed the main source of the mission’s funds—the Williams Trust, which was invested in Napier properties. Voluntaries played by Mr. IT. Webb were Mendelssohn’s “Andante, violin concerto’’ and ••Fanfare” by Ascher.
