HAWERA MAIN SCHOOL
COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL REPORT
The report of the committee or the Hawera Alain Sciiool to bo submitted to tne annual meeting ot householders this evening is as fonow: Dental uiiue.—-Lnitil the end of last year this committee had taken complete charge ot t.he clinic, ot winch, indeed, it was the original sponsor. This year, iliowever, the control has been uanded over to a properly constituted dental committee, whose iirst task was the collection or
funds to replace the old clinic by a type A clinic, which was essential for the complete service of the district. The new clinic has been provided and we expect that before long the whole district will have been covered. We regret the loss of Nurse Oato, who has done a big work here, but welcome in her place Nurses Lawson and Hunt. School Concert and Operetta. —On the suggestion of the teaching staff your committee decided to forego the school ball and hold an operetta as a means of augmenting the funds. This entailed a great amount of work by the staff, which was cheerfully undertaken, and resulted in a most excellent performance. The financial result was also satisfactory. Grounds.—Beyond ordinary maintenance, which keeps the school surroundings in a most creditable state, two pieces of work have been carried out. The concreted area at the infant school has been enlarged so that outdoor dancing and drill can be carried out dry shod. Secondly, the boxthom fence on the playing field has been grubbed out and replaced by a sheepproof fence. This work was done under the No. o scheme and reflects great credit on the workers. The public has received good value for the money expended here. Picnic.—Financial depression and the occurrence of the earthquake are the reasons which impelled the committee to abandon the picnic for this year. Staff.—The headmaster lias referred to the staff changes and the committee wish to associate themselves with him in deploring the loss to' the school of well-tried teachers, and also in congratulations and good wishes to them in their new positions. The committee particularly felt the loss of Miss Grindrod, one of our own old pupils, and a teacher whose character and ideals wei’e of the highest. Future Outlook. —It is obvious that committees will have heavier financial responsibilities thrust upon them if educational facilities are to he kept at their present standard, e.g., more money will have to he found _ for the provision of teaching material. At the same time it will be necessary to fight tooth and nail against a blind economising which will sacrifice the true interests of the children. Already the classes are too big for efficient work. It is also prouosed that dental treatment he charged for. Thanks. —The committee again have to thank the headmaster and staff for their loyal and cheerful co-operation in every movement for the good of the school. We also wish to thank the many friends who have helped us by donations and otherwise. And lastly we wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to the Press for their great help in keening our needs and activities before the nubile.
