SOCCER CONTROL

ANNUAL REVIEW OF N.Z.F.A

NO OVERSEAS TOURS

“It. is interesting to note that the differences of opinion which have existed in the code in New South Wales have been overcome, and that the way is clear for the resumption of intercolonial games. The opinion of the council, however, is that owing to the economic conditions, no tours should be considered.”

This paragraph from the fortieth annual report of the New Zealand Football Association indicates that for another season attention will be confined to the game within the Dominion. Every effort will be made to give greater interest to the competitions _ for the Dominion trophies, the premier one being the F.A. trophy, now held by Auckland. The others are the Chatham Cup, won last season by Petone; the Brown Shield, held by South Auckland; and the Peter Dawson Cup, hold bj- Westland. The report shows that there are in the Dominion 33S club teams and 176 school teams, a total of 514. Wellington leads with 98 club teams and 36 school teams; Auckland .follows vit h 89 and 41;. Canterbury, 43 and J 9: Otago, 38 and 20. The lack of interest shown in the F.A. trophy competition by some of the major associations is" deplored. Only one game was played last season, in which.. Auckland beat Wellington, 4 —2. There were no challenges for the Blown Shield, and the Question of reorganising this competition will be dealt with at the annual meeting. There were 25 entries for the Chatham Cup, showing a marked advance. The trophy has been won three times each by Auckland and Wellington. and once each by Otago and Canterburv.

Satisfaction is recorded at the progress made by the code in the primary and secondary schools and at the quality of the nlay in the annual tournaments. The splendid class of football shown in the North v. South nrimary schools game, the first interisland match of the kind, is specially noted. The question of a, North v. South secondary schools match is to be discussed at the annual meeting. The financial statement shows an improved credit balance compared with a year ago.
