On Friday, however the scheme terminates and nc further work will be available lor a fortnight, by which time the Unemployment Board, it is stated, will have formulated further relief plans. Under the No. 4a- scheme for subsidising farm labour 27 men have been engaged for terms ranging from fowl weeks (the minimum period) to six months (the maximum). The conditions 'are that the board allows 15s per week for single men and 25s per week for married men the employers to provide full board. The present cost to the board for the amount of local labour under tire scheme is £2l 5s per week. Six returned soldiers have been given work under the Hawera Returned' Soldi'eiis’ Association scheme, but the unemployment committee could pin re a larger number if more work was offered. The assoc fat.ion will subsidise wages uip to 5s per day. No contracts have yet been let. under the No. 4b scheme, by which the board will pay one-third of the contract price for gorse-g rubbing, scrub cutting, etc., the subsidy not to exceed £75 in any •one contract.
