NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) The handicaps for the Auckland, Canterbury and Feilding meetings will give followers of racing plenty to ponder over during^ he next few days. Royal Acre looked very bright at Awapuni last week, and won very easilv on the second day. The pace of the 'race was extraordinary slow, and it appeared as if some of the rideis imagined it was a marathon .ace, O „ . a. * * *9 Despite the number of wins over hurdles registered by 'Royal Acre he was only called on to concede Tenacre I 4lb in the Kairanga Hurdles at the Manawatu meeting. Teiiacrc’s record as a iurnper is moderate indeed. * ° X * •* * ivozan repeated his good form of the Wellington meeting at the recent meeting of the Manawatu Club, where lie ran two close seconds, and, with an ounce of luck, lie must have succeeded once at least. Ivozan will be at Wairarapa at Easter and should pay his way there.
The Australian-bred gelding Puriri Park brought a great reputation to the Maiiawatu meeting. His rider was lucky in drawing a good barrier position, and Puriri Park was soon one of the leading brigade each day, but at the closing stages • of the races he quickly sunk in oblivion and On the form shown is not yet as good as some supposed. * # The light-weight jockey lv. Vo it re has earned a fine reputation as a rider, and lias ridden winners on many of the prominent courses of our Dominion. He is apprenticed to Trainer E. Hatch at Awapuni, and during .that apprenticeship lias ridden many horses in races decided on his home course, but incredible as it appears, View Halloa, who won at the Manawatu meeting last. Monday, is Die first winner Voitre has piloted On the Awapuni course. Toxeuma was unlucky each day at tlie recent meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club. The hard track was another feature that did not assist the gelding to victory, but he is well, and if he happens to strike a soft track at Ellerslie at Easter he will lie hard to boat in the Easter Handicap. •* -»- v » * iChrysology looked well at Awapuni last Monday and Trainer R. Alexander was confident this gelding would lie hard to beat. He was taken to the front at barrier rise and it was only over the last hundred yards that Chrysology weakened into fourth place, less than a length from the winner. In all probability Chrysology will be taken to Eiccarton at Easter, where he is expected to run well in the 'Great Easter Handicap. * * » » * In the recently-run Thompson Handicap Silvermine (8.6) narrowly defeated Laughing Prince (0.1-1). In the coining Easter Handicap to be decided at Ellerslie on Easter Saturday, Silvermine has 8.0 (a rise of 31b) and Laughing Prince was awarded 9.12 (a pound more). At the scale of weights the Taranaki-owned gelding should again beat; his dousrhtv opponent.
Paitonu ran an excellent rac-e last Alonday at Awapuni, finishing a very close third, after having ally thing but a good run. lie is not easy to ride, but if lie is well handled in his coming engagements at the Feilding meeting lie should make a return for his recent expenses. * * * * -* I Peter Jacßson ivas drawn “off the j course” in the Cloverlea Nursery Handicap decided at the recent meeting of the Alan a wain Racing Club. He began very smartly, but naturally was forced to cover a lot of extra ground. The youngster finished remarkably well, and on the showing should turn out a good racing proposition. * * * * * j Although not lucky enough to earn stake money, both Orennatown and Little Doubt ran good races at- the late meeting at Awapuni. They should both do well ’ere long. * „ » * Eastertime further enhanced his good reputation, by his fine effort at the Manawatu meeting last Alonday. With two furlongs to cover Eastertime was conceeding many of his opponents an almost impossible start, but a great effort on his part landed him a close second. * * * * * •Many who saw Cricket Bat’s performances at Trentham and Awapuni expected the youngster to extend Lady Quex in last ATonday's ATanawatu Sires Produce Stakes, but like A apian, Cricket Bat received a very rough passage in tlie race.
Tn taking Lady Quex through next to the rails when only a hundred yards from the winning post at Awapuni last Monday, Jockey R. Reed took on one of the greatest risks in riding the writer has witnessed. <Once through the almost, impossible passage way she was under a pull, but with a couple of chains to go Supremacy was brought along with a great run. but Reed only had to give the great little mare a reminder aind she easily held off the northerner. Why Reed took on such an unnecessary risk on such a great galloper is hard to understand.
