BRANCH OF THE W.C.T.U. SECOND BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED,, (From Our Own Correspondent). The “Y” branch of the celebrated its second, birthday at Eitliam on Alqnday evening in the form of a banquet and a lengthy toast list. The function was held in the Methodist Sunday School, there being a large attendance of local members and visitors.. The Mayor (Air. Ira. J. Bridger) presided over the gathering. Others on the platform were the Mayoress, Miss AlcLay (Dominion organiser), Airs. M. T. Phillips (president Taranaki branch of W.C.T.U.), Mrs. H. Stanners (local president), and Aliss Rita Crozier (president of the Y branch). ' The following toast list was honoured: Loyal toast; “The Prosperity of New Zealand,” proposed. ,by Aliss D. Wood, responded to by Ensign Barker j “The W.C.T.U.,” Aliss R. Crozier— Mrs.' Holland; “The Y Movement,” Rev. T. Coatsworth—Mrs. Phillips (Stratford); “Y Alovement Organiser,” Miss A. Hopkins —Aliss McLay; “Superintendent ‘Y’ Branch.” Aliss M. Tarrant—Aliss D. AYood; “Eltham Branch President,” Air. A. Penhall —Miss R. Crozier; “The United Churches,” Air. Dalmer (Oamaru)—Air. F. GawitH. Items were rendered as follow: “Swedish Alarch,” Salvation Army Orchestra; vocal solo, Aliss S. Williams; vocal solo, Aliss Mary Cocker; ivy-leaf solo, Staff Captain Perry; musical monologue, Aliss Sybil Gubb. HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

There was only a fair attendance at the evening session of the horticultural show yesterday, when Air. C. A. Wilkinson. AI.P., presented the trophies.

RED CROSS;

The Eltham branch of the Red Cross Society met last night. Those present were Mesdames Gubb, Prentice Ricketts, Darling, Reakes (secretary) and Mr. Ira J. Bridger (chairman). The secretary reported that aiL tiie refugees had been equipped with all necessary articles of clothing, boots and shoes, etc., provided by the relief committee. The rooms were open daily and great appreciation has been expressed by the refugees of the reception they had been given. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on Tuesday, 17th inst., and to start the home nursing classes on the 24th inst. The Red Cross Committee at Alangatoki had handed to the society the sum of £7 15s 8d as the proceeds of the dance run in aid pf the refugees’ equipment The Junior Red Cross at Te Roti had also handed in £2 for the same purpose. The secretary was instructed to write the secretaries.of the above committees expressing thanks for the donation received.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE

The Eltham Unemployment Committee met last night. These present were Mr. Ira J. Bridger (chairman), P. Muggeridge and T. Trask. Apologies were received from Mr. McCready. The secretary reported that 138 had registered as unemployed in the committee area and 90 were at 'present employed under the No. 5 scheme made up as follows: Single men. 37; married men with one dependent 28, and. 25 married men with two or more dependents. The total expenditure for the week was approximately £175. Three single men were approved for employment under the No. 4A scheme and four men were allocated to the Riverlea School Committee subject to the application being made by the Education Board.
