SOUTH TARANAKI TOURNEY
OPENED this morning
One of the most popular events m the croquet world of South Taranaki is the annual tournament, which attracts players. from a wide area. 11ns yeai there are players from all the South, Taranaki clubs and from New Plymouth and Wanganui districts. , This year’s is. the fourth tournament of the association in the southern hair of the province aud the entries prove that it is becoming increasingly popular. . „
The officials of the association are: Patron, AJ.r H. G. Dickie, M.P.; presidents Mr G. J. Bayley; vice-presid-ents. Airs Dowling . and Air A. J. Gibbs; committee, Alesdames A. v. Tart, F. Evans, A. Alurdoch, J. A\. Harding. Riera, J. D. McKay, Petrie, and Air J. AI. Clague. . 'The president (Air G. J. Bayley), in a. happy speech, offered a cordial welcome- to visitors and local members and expressed the hope that they would all have an enjoyable time and that play would bo keen and well contested. He said the lawns were in very good order and 1 assured all that the committee were out to do their utmost to make the whole affair a great success. With that assurance, he formally declared the tourney opened. The list- of controlling officials is as follow: Official referee,. Air J. At. Clague; assistant referee, Airs Bull; umpire, Alesdames B. C. Bennett, F. Evans. A. 1-3. Stevens, J. AY. Harding, A. V. Taiij Chadwick, Air A. J. Gibbs and Captain Hartnell; bon. secretary and manager, Airs Bull. The events include the open South Taranaki and ladies’ champion single and doubles. B grade champion singles and the various handicap events. Play is taking place on the Kia Ora and Park lawns, all of which are in good order.
