NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”)

Prior to going to New Plymouth, .Democratic registered a last gallop on the Hgmont track, but in his engagements last week la l raced like a “quitter." '

As the Jackson Stakes, to he run at Wanganui .on Saturday, is a- straight out weight tor age event. Ammon Ilia nil] escape penalty and will only have 7.0 to carry. This, to a large extent, will lessen the interest in the race.

As a two-year-old, Gesture was exceptionally good. Jn fact, after her first race, she won her next eight races. This season Gesture’s, form, lias been verv moderate, and it is doubtful if she will ever attain the same standard -lie reached last season.

In the Shade was not produced on] the second day of the Taranaki meet-i ing, owing, it is said, to a suitable rider not being available. Our Dominion is very short of capable riders, and a lien meetings clash the same difficulty, always exists. ! ! As a i li rco-yea r-old Cashier she well distinct promise, and last season he also ran smm fair races. Cashier has not liccii raced’ much this season, but what little lie lias done is much below his earlier efforts. lie looked well at New Idymonth fast week, but never looked. 1.0 have a chance. j ' . . * * . J Arikira was tried over “sprint i < mrses at the Taranaki meeting, and was solidly supported each day, and his failures cost bettors <a lot. of money.: As lie lias always won at the end over long distances, it does not appear to be wise wasting the energy of this promising hack by trying to win six furlong tares. ' •» * * * * j The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club will take place on Timrsdav and Saturday next. i * ' * * *• * j The, Wellington Racing Club will dis-' tribute COfiflff at their meeting next month. Substantial as this amount is. ] it represents Cl7lO less than the amount originally intended for distribution. j I mnetiioiis, who won at New Plymouth last Saturday, figures as a ' three-year-old, whereas she is little more than a two-year-old. Impetuous was foa'led on July 28. and four days later ranked as a two-year-old. Being j a daughter of Limond and Pennon, this filly -should ilo well in future, j * * * *■ j Both Lailv Quex and Hunting Orv | were galloped on during the running n the Flying Handicap on the opening f day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting. While Hunting Cry suffered

little, Lady Qnex suffered severely, as shown by her poor form in tbe Tara[naki Stakes last Saturday.

Despite the brilliant performances of Lady Quex and Hunting Cry under big weights, last Thursday, Trainer J. T. Jamieson was as confident as ever that the two-year-old, Ammon Ha, would prove their superior in the Taranaki Stakes. Even allowing that Lady Quex was hardly herself, it would appear that the champion youngster must prove' her superior, so easily did he beat Hunting Cry and Co. last Saturday. * v - *

The month’s suspension imposed on Jockey L. Jarvis by the judicial committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club should act as a warning to others. 01 late there* has been several similar incidents .which, had to. stop. On the second day of the recent meeting of the Hginont Placing Club a rider was guilty of a glaring case of a similar nature, and in that particular instance it was the means of the offender winning. The incident did not altogether escape official notice, as the rider was subjected to a searching cross-examin-ation after the event, but as the race was won the rider would, no doubt, treat the advice tendered as a joke. In such cases suspension is the only way of removing such a vicious prac- < ice. -* * « * *

Recent racing has made Yertigern a. v-ery fit gelding and the connections of Otairi are fortunate that the Eminent Cup was; decided before the Taranaki meeting, as Yertigern. would prove much harder to heat- now. * * * * *■

Considering the recognised rule that a high class two-year-olcl is very hard to beat in the autumn under weight-for-age conditions Ammon Ita paid a wonderful dividend in last. Saturday's Taraeaki Stakes. That he is really hiiglt class was clearly demoistrated 'by the easy manner in which lie field his position even in the early stages of the race. Ridden out, it is hard to say how easily Amnion Ra could have won.

Paganelli usually runs well when fresh, hut in the Flying Handicap bust Saturday hei could not pace it with the field over the first few furlongs, and was thus badly placed racing to the straight. He did not- do any better in the first half-mile of last Saturday’s Taranaki Stakes, and was actually last and conceding a- big start to the field two furlongs from the finishing point. The small field’ gave Paganelli a. chance to secure a run over the last furlong, and lie finished better than all save tile winner, Ammon Ra.

Ceremony had been responsible, for excel lent work prior to the Taranaki meeting, and while recognising that the gelding might suffer through lack of a couple of races, the connections of the stable were prepared to see Ceremony perform satisfactorily. This he did, as he led lor over five furlongs, and ran ■mi well enough to finish a. fair fourth. Ceremony will be a runner in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui next Saturday. and’ while he will have to make great improvement ten beat such as Amnion Ra his presence wii] add interest to the race. **. * * *

Of late Bayacre has been verv unrulv at the starting barrier and at times would not face the tapes. This misbehaviour has cost his owner excellent Prospects of winning a race, as m these da\s of strong fields a performer cminot concede a start to his opponents. After the first day’s racing at the recent nioeting of the Taranaki Joekev C lull). Bayacre’s mouth was inspected and it was found that a sham molar had inflicted a deep wound in his month. Portion ol the molar was removed, and Bn vac-re will not he raced until such lias healed, when it L hoped his manners will improve.
