For some time a throe-year-old mare belonging to Air .1. Forbes, of Normanby, had been uiidor observation, it being suspected that a missing packing needle had been swallowed by tlio animal. This needle, some seven inches in length, had been lost in the proximity of the mare’s feed, and as a careful search failed to disclose it, swallowing was suspected. Recently tin* mare developed a soreness in her side, and a veterinary surgeon was called in. The trouble was thought to he a split rib. but as swelling increased the vet., Mr E. R. Marshall, operated and found, lying crossways on tbs mare’s ribs, the missing needle. ■The extraction proved an intricate task, but through an incision over four inches in length the needle was finally recovered. That the needle -was swallowed by the animal seems to ho the only conclusion, as she had not been known to lie down near the feed boxes. If swallowing was the case the needle travelled about the mare’s body for over six months until the operation revealed it. A local anaesthetic was used for the operation, and the mare is making good recovery anil is showing no ill effects of the trouble. THE EARTHQUAKE.
