STRICT LAW IN JERSEY. Men who are in the habit of having “one over the eight” should be glad they did not live in Jersey. Inhabitants of the island are up in arms against what they term the “harsh” and “unEnglish” penalties imposed upon too convivial people. Under the local laws any person who is convicted of drunkenness and disorderly behaviour may, in addition to being fined, have to suffer the indignity of having his photograph, with his name underneath it, placed in a prominent place in the bars of taverns he frequents. It rests with the court as to how long a man’s photograph shall remain to expose him as an example of intemperance i:o others. A public-house whicli wilfully refuses to exhibit an erring customers photograph is liable to of line of £OO. Likewise should the publican fail to remove it upon the expiry of ills man’s period of “disgrace” ho is liable to a similar penalty. WHERE THERE’S AN IDEA THERE’S A PATENT!
