COST OF DOLE

HUGE PAYMENTS IN BRITAIN. £10,000,000 NEEDED. (United Preen Association—By Electrio Telegraph Copyright, l LONDON, Feb. 3. The “Daily Telegraph” says that the Government this month will bo compelled to ask Parliament to sanction another £10,000,000 for tlie purpose of the, unemployment dole, making the fund’s debt at the Treasury £80,000,000. The extra £10,000,000 will only suffice to lido over the difficulties for a further three months if the present unemployment continues. This is apart from £22.000,000 a year which tlie Exchequer pays to the account of “transitional benefit,” from which 400,000 now benefit. Tlie Prime Minister has announced that tlie Royal Commission on Unemployment Insurance has been asked to make an interim report oil the subject of transitional benefits at an early date. This type of benefit is not provided for in' the basis of the insurance scheme, and evidence before the commission on its effect on the finances of the scheme has caused concern in Press and Parliament.
