Nine stowaways on the .steamer Treherbori. charged at Swansea, pleaded
guilty. ‘ Tim owners' counsel said lie timlei - s |. <)( id that, conditions in Australia were, very bad. but the stowaway business was becoming such an intolerable nuisance and an expense to shipowners that he had been instructed to prosecute in every ease. Evidence was given that the .men were discovered a day out. irom M oslem Australia. The captain put them to work and they gave no trouble throughout the trip. Each _ told a movjn<r stiir v of conditions in Western Vustralia and of having tramped hundreds of miles seeking work. The magistrate sympathised with, their plight and in consideration ot their having worked and behaved well sentenced them to ten days’ imprisonment.
