METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL

' ANNIVERSARY. On Tuesday evening at the Parish Hail the anniversary of the Metliodist Sunday School was celebrated bv a tea party and a concert later in the evening. On the previous Sunday anniversary services were held at the Methodist Church, when the morning seiwice was taken by Rev E. S. Etninitt, of Hawera, and Rev." P: J. Gossum took the evening service, both of whom gave interasting addresses to the children. Tuesday evening’s function was arranged by the Sunday School teaching staff, comprising the" following ladies and gentlemen.- Mesdames Tonkin and Davies, Miss Myra Harding, Mr. Harding and Miss Myrtle Evans] organist, who were assisted by some of the senior girls. During the evening Mr. B. C. Davies presented the annual report and statement of accounts, whichs bowed a more satisfactory state of finance than that which existed at this period last year. Mr. Davies also expresed thanks to the parents for the interest taken throughout the year. Parents’ interest arias (mainly manifested by the children’s attendance, and the regular attendance of the children during the past year was the greatest sign to the teachers that- parents were evincing interest in the Sunday School. Concluding his remarks Mr. Davies mentioned that the building the new Sunday School was being kept steadily in view, but if would be necessary to wait until more prosperous times before the scheme could be finalised.

Prizes to the children were presented by Mr. Cossum, who tendered thanks to the teachers for the splendid work they had accomplished throughout the year; he also expressed thanks to all those who had assisted in the evening’s function. The musical programme for the evening was provided entirely by the pupils and the following numbers were given : Piano solo, Linda Davies ; recitation, Roy Dawson; day school chorus by the infants; recitations, Jessie and Mabel Williams; piano solo, Dennis Cook; recitation, Ella Guy; piano duet, Bonnie Tonkin and Linda Davies; recitation, Ken Catchpole; recitation, Florence Harding; double piano duet, Bonnie Tonkin, Linda Davies, Marjory Cook, and Pat Tonkin; recitation, Gwen Mvhill and Elsie Tattersall

RED CROSS SOCIETY. A social evening under the auspices of the Kaponga branch of the Red Cross Society, home nursing section, was held at the residence of Mrs J. Guy, on Thursday evening. During the evening songs were contributed by Miss Maud Maud, Miss Myrtle Evans and Rev. P. J. Sossmn, Mrs. Evans being at the piano. An interesting competition was won by Miss Maxwell. During the evening. Air. Cossum, in his capacity as president of the local branch of the Red Cross Society, presented the certificates won by candidates at the recent examinations. Certificates were awarded as follow: Intermediate, Alesdaines Guthrie and Brewer, Misses Jean G'uy and B. Oossum ; elementary, Miss Jean Dempsey (Rowan), Alisses Irene Brewer, I Melville, Mrs. AY. Lind (Awatuna) and Miss Shepherd (Opunake). After the presentation of the certificates, Sister Inglis, on behalf of the Kaponga branch, presented the two 4s, Oreina Guthrie and June Thurston, with a large bonbon each. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Tenders for the alterations to the Town Hall, necessitated as a result of the forthcoming installation of “talkies,” which closed on Wednesday, were secured by Air. AY. Melville. Alisses A. AI. and A. Farey, of AA'ellington, and daughters of Air. J. Farev •of Kaponga, are spending the Christmas holidays here. Airs R. Butler of Wanganui who has been .spending a holiday with her daughter, Airs. Alex. Alelville, has left for Hawera.
