RELIEF WORK WAGES
PROTEST TO THE MINISTER
(By Telegraph—Press Aeeociatiou.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 16. A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, Manufacturers’ Association and. representatives of the farming community waited on the Minister of Public Works, Hon. W. B. Taverner, | to-day. Speakers urged that lis a day was too high a standard to pay on re- , lief works and induced men with a "tired feeling” to j-oin the ranks oi the unemployed. Air Taverner said that the setting of the standard of wage was a matter of Government policy. He would place the representations of the deputation before, the Cabinet. There were some-, tiling like 10,000 men out of work and work had to be rationed. Single men bad to be put off and replaced by married men. This was not a- nice thing to have to do as the single men had to live. The Government was planning big development works. A voice: I hone it is not railway extension work! The Minister: No, it is not a railway extension. He added that be hoped in the near future to be able to make a statement on the matter.
