FIRES AT WELLINGTON
MAN’S NARROW ESCAPE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 28. While an apartment house, 85 The Terrace, was burning fiercely last evening an old man. J. Needham, slept soundly in a back room and was only awakened by the firemen breaking into the building. After the flames had been subdued he was found to have been the sole occupant. There is little doubt that tragedy was narrowly averted bv the promptness of tlie fli-e brigade in getting the fire under control.
Shortly after midnight the top floor of Thompson Bros., Ltd., warehouse, Blair Street, was found burning. The fire had: a strong hold and was. not thoroughly, under control until after 1 o’clock. As the fir© was almost wholly confined to the upper and third storey difficulty was experienced in directing hoses on the flames.
