Captain Matthews crashed en route to Sydney to-day. His machine was rather ba'dly damaged, but. Matthews is unhurt 'and reached Sydney in another aeroplane at 4.5 p.m., when 1 he received an 1 enthusiastic welcome.
Leaving Brisbane at 7 a.m., escorted by Flying Officer Owen, in a Ryan monoplane, Matthews landed at Lisin orci for lun'ch, and received) a civic reception. Ho .resumed the flight, shortly after 2 p.m. and hadl attained an altitude of 100 feet when the engine stopped. Matthews glided to earth, struck a- wire fence and smashed the under-carriage, propeller and pert ion; of the fuselage.
The crowd was relieved when Matthews climbed out unihurt. Ho lit a cigarette and remarked: “Well, that’s that.”
Captain F. J. Matthews was one of the three pilots who took part in the recent air race from England to Australia. Ho reached Darwin on October 18, being the first of the three to reach the goal, but he had a good handicap, for ho started out on September 16, whereas Flight-Lieutenant Hill left England on October 5 and Wing-Com-mander Kingisford Smith on October 9. Flight-Lieutenant Hill crashed on Timor Island on October 18 and WingCommander Kingsford Smith arrived at Darwin an October 19.
