DERAILMENT AT CROSSING

ENGINE AND CAR LEAVE RAILS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.} CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 27. A locomotive and one carriage were derailed at Chaney’s Corner, Belfast, at 5.30 this evening. As the Christ-church-Waikari train passed over a crossing the engine left the rails, probable owing to the presence on the metals of loose stones thrown by passing motor traffic. The engine, taking the first passenger carriage with it, ploughed along the shingle ballasting for 50 yards before the wheels became firmly embedded.

The locomotive remained upright. Neither the driver nor the fireman was hurt.
