AUCKLAND, Oct. 27.

After he had arrested one of their number an attack was made on a constable in Grey’s Avenue to-night by a party of young men, who threw him to the ground, kicking him about the head and face. The attack was made suddenly as the constable was walking away with his prisoner and only lasted a short time, the assailants running away as soon as they had freed the man in custody. Civilians who were passing in a motor car drove up Grey’s Avenue to Karangahape Road, informing constables -who were in this locality, and who later made two arrests.

The, attack took place near an hotel at the bottom of Grey’s Avenue. As Constable Morgan was passing about ten young men, who appeared to be together, left the hotel, and as they went up the road indulged in “skylarking,” while it is alleged that obsence language was used. The constable determined to arrest one of the men, and succeeded in taking him into custody. When he was walking away with his charge the others followed and suddenly rushed him, throwing him to the ground by force of numbers in spite of his resistance. Constable Morgan was then kicked about the face and head and pummelled, while the arrested man was able to break free from his grasp. As quickly as the attack had been made it ceased, the men rushing away up the road. A motor car was passing at the time and the occupants, seeing the constable’s 'plight, pursued the men and observed their appearance. Then, driving up Karangahape Road, where the services of other constables were obtained, they jrnve descriptions of the men. The police made a search of the locality and later arrested two men as suspects, and they will be charged in the Police Court to-morrow morning with assault and obstructing Constable Morgan in the execution of his duties. Constable Morgan received no serious hurt, the chief injury being to his jaw, which was cut and swollen as the result of kicks. After the attack he required medical attention.
