A vote of sympathy with the Avidow, family amt relati\*es of the late Mr Fred Vincent. Avas passed at a general meeting of businessmen held in Elthani last night. One of the most popular and successful Jersev breeders in the province, Mr. F. W. Cornwall, of Bell Block, was seized with a sudden illness while at Hastings on "Wednesday. He Avas in that district as judge of the Jersey section at the Royal Slioaa’. His many friends will learn with sincere .regret that bis condition is very serious, his right side being paralysed and his speech gone.

Joyce. Bros., of Eltham. Avho conduct a tOAvn milk.round, had the misfortune, this morning to lose practically the whole of the milk .supply .needed for their customers, a® ay ell as suffering considerable damage toj their pony and conveyance. While Mr Joyce was delivering milk to a- customer the pony made off down the main street and, •while turning from Bridge Street into Stunners Street, one AA'heel struck the telegraph pole and: the cart turned over, smashing the shafts and doing other damage. The Court of Appeal delivered judgment at Wellington yesterday in the case of the Christchurch City Council versus the* Attorney-General. The appeal Avas dismissed. The council appealed against the judgment of Air Justice Herdman in upholding an application for an injunction to restrain the council from erecting buildings on Cathedral Square.

At a meeting of Eltham business men last night it was mentioned that the Eltham Dairy Company in its monthly circular urged its suppliers to “support- their own town,” . It was pointed out that, the company held considerable property in the borough of Eltham and it was in their own Interests to assist in .the growth arid prosperity of the town. Mr ,C., A. Wilkinson, M.P., Mr I. J. Bridger (Mayor), Mr Morton (vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce), Mr T. B. Crumb ..arid others expressed keen appreciation of this action and. it was decided, to write the dairy company expressing the thanks and appreciation of the business men and town generally.

Offering plants for sale and soliciting help for a. family of vonng children whom, it was suggested, starving, a woman who recently made calls at residences in the Hawera district aroused: the compassion of a number of householders. Sympathy is reported to have taken practical form in a number of instances. With the object of having further possible help rendered the case was brought to the notice of the charitable ,aid! officer and the Mayoress ■(Mrs. E. A. Pricey) who, however, were previously aware of it. Certain ass-sis-tanee, it was ascertained, liadi already been rendered from these quarters and employment found for the husband,of the woman and the circumstances did not apear to be those of destitution. At the annual meeting of the Taranaki Tennis Association on Thursday the question of the. holding of the North Island and provincial championships created some discussion, the New Plymouth Club advising that it,, had decided against having the meeting in January as in previous years. The meeting discussed the 'holding of the championships at Hawera, but the annual tournament at the southern centre created a difficulty. Mr. Leee'e stated that Hawera. did not wish to alter its present dates, while it appeared uncertain whether the New Zealaiid Association would agree to have the championships on the present December dates. Eventually .it was .decided to inake a grant of £25 towards the expenses of the tournament, and, failing its acceptance, to Hawera.
