WANGANUI FIXTURE GUINEAS TO CYLINDER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ' WANGANUI. Sept. 11. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting opened to-day in line weather after yesterday’s wintry conditions. The attendance was fair, the totalizator turnover showing a decrease of £4377, being £15,658 as compared with £20,035 10s last year. The track was in splendid order and fast. After Mister Gamp won the Okehu Hurdles bis rider weighed in 21b short, having lost Ills lead-bag, and the winner was disqualified, the race being awarded, to Avro, with Royal Acre placed second and Make Up third. After Melissa, had won the Seafield Handicap her rider, M. J. Pine, was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for crossing. Cylinder won the Guineas. tlie_ first ' classic of the season, in convincing style after Lineage and Arisus had made most of the running. Count Palatine sprang a decided surprise in the Marangai Handicap, coming from the back toi heat the favourite, Mendip, narrowly. Silvermine also sur-i prised by winning the Flying Handicap in a. slashing finish in which Arrow Lad end Laughing Prince also participated. Heads separated the trio. After the dull and threatening weather conditions of Wednesday, it came as a. surprise- to the Wanganui Jockey Club to find Thursday an ideal day and the club opened- their meeting under •such conditions before quite a good attendance, hut in keeping with recent meetings, the tot a I isator -figures (showed aj large decrease which may have keen larger had not the corresponding day of last year been very wet. For the Maiden Race- Vandyke was made a. pronounced) favourite over Jayi son, with Baskier and Tar Baby best backed of the other runners. Vandyke [ and Sir Mercury both misbehaved bad--1 ly at the barrier and delayed the start, but Vandyke was quickest awav from a good! start, being attended by' Baskier and Hinewai and Jayson ail'd A ecu. At the end of half a. furlong, Baskier took charge to lead into the straight from Jayson (who rail wide) and Vandyke. The last named ran to the lead a inmdrecl yards from the winning post and eventually won very easily by two lengths from Jayson, who beat Baskier by a, bead. Laconic was a creditable fourth ; then came Hinewai and Biflex. The winner can gallop, but was a handful even ior H. Gray. Jayson again ran a good but unlucky race “and Ba skier’s forward running is worth' noting. Make- L p, Luminary and Nukumai were- the- favourites for the next race-. W hen the barrier rose Luminary was immediately taken to the front, but lost his rider at the first jump and Royal Acre- then took nn the role of pacemaker from Make Up, Avro and Mister Gamp. Racing up the back stretch, Royal Acre and Make Up' opened up a big gap on Avro and Mister Gamp, hut at-, the last fence Avr-o-, Make- up and Royal Acre were' together. Onco over Avro drew out and looked an easy winner till Mister Gamp put in a great run and heat Avro by a, head. Royal Acre was two lengths further awav. followed! closely ky Make 1 i> and Nukumai Mister Gamp’s rider lost two pounds of lead at the last jump owing to his lead hagbreaking and Avro got the stake. Avro ran a fine race and but for overconfi-

deuce on liis rider’s part he must ha\e won easily. In addition Avro s- ridei lest his whip on the journey. Kloyai Acre and Make Up were made too much use of. J . The Warden was installed a good favourite for the Putiki Hack, others well supported being Spearopa and the Keeble combination (Adventus and Great Lady). Joyspear began smartly to lead out of the straight from Kahikatoa, The Warden and Ann oyer. Up the back Joyspear was closely followed by Kahikatoa, Oallamart, Pedestal and The Warden, and at the straight entrance Joyspear was just, in front ol Grand Jury, Little Wonder and Pedestal and, finishing gamely, Joyspear went on to win by -nearly a length from Shortly, who just beat Grand Jury. Then heads away came Little Wonder and Kilorell. Joyspear lias not been in work a great tnne, ( but looks a much improved gelding. Shortly finished very fast, ancl appeared unlucky. A similar remark applies to Kilorell. but whatever chances The Warden and Annoyer possessed was spoilt by bad passages. Fern den, Oadland and Hopwood was the order of betting on tile Seafield Handicap. The .start was not a good one, Royal Game gaining a good advantage but Te A-tiawu was soon in charge and was followed past the lour furlong post by Fernden and Melissa, Cad land .heading the rest. .Racing into the straight Fernden joined Te Atiawa and Melissa ran up fast. The last named was in charge two hundred yards from home and won very easily from Te Atiawa; Fernden was a good third and Broad Acre and Cad I and next. Melissa won very easily and registered an attractive performance. Her rider (J. M. Pine) came in rather quickly on Fernden and the judicial committee suspended him for the rest of the meeting. To Atiawa ran a solid race, but evidently Fernden is in want of a race, as he weakened over the. filial part of the- journey. 1 Cylinder carried practically half oi the investments on the Guineas. His rider (H. Gray) allowed Arisus and Lineage, to lead for the first seven furlongs, but when called on Cylinder cut down the leaders to win easily from Arisus. Lineage stopped badly to finish a poor third, but Paratoo rail well enough to suggest a win in hack company. Autopay, Pakitere and Royal Finance! were easily the, best -backed in the D'urie Hack. From an excellent start Autopay, Arrowzone, Huntingdon, Monaloff, and Orapai soon became prominent, but Monaloff got sent back and Autopay led into the straight from Huntingdon, Orapai and Sporting Chance. With a, half furlong to go Autopay looked- like winning easily, but Monaloff, coming with a fine ran, beat Autopay by a head. Sporting Chance was three- lengths away third, fell-owed by Huntingdon and Pakitere. After jumping away smartly from the barrier Monaloff lost ground, on.ly to finish like a good one. Autopay’s rider thought- he had the, race won, hence his narrow defeat. Sporting Chance ran well, but Pomp was the unlucky runner.

| Of the excellent field saddled up for the Marangai Handicap Men dip ■ and My Own counted! most admire-rs. When the field settled down Blimp was the pilot from Otairi, Sir Limond and Star Stranger. With half the journey over Blimp and Otairi together led Star Stranger, Mendip and Ruaiiui and, entering the straight, Mendip- ran th rough to Blimp and- Otairi. Jn the | straight Mendip, Otairi and Blimp were having a battle royal! when Count Palatine came along with a great run to win by a half netVc front Mendip. Otairi, Blimp and Star Stranger were all close up. Last season Count Palatine gave indications of developing into a good l one, but later disappointed. He may be good this season. Mendip. Otairi and Blimp all went good races, but the surprise was Star Stranger, who was always near the leaders. Backers .selected Ceremony as extra good for the Flying Handicap, but there wa:s plenty of money for "Laugh ing Prince and Arrow Lad. On the tapes rising, Arrow Lad, Silvermine and Ceremony began quickly and, passing the half mile post, the last named was the deader from- Lady Quex, Arrow La-cl, Silvermine and Laughing Prince. The first to turn for home was Arrow Lad, hut Silve ravine and Laughing | Prince immediately challenged and in a great finish Silvermine won by half a head from Arrow Lad, with Laughing Prince another half a head away. Equitant was. a close fourth. Silvermine showed exceptional courage to win, while Arrow Lad’s performance was little inferior. With 9.8 in the saddle. Laughing Prince registered -a feat. Equitant was a trifle unlucky.

At the time of telegraphing the weather is not very promising for to-mor-row \s racing. Large fields are promised in most events andi tire winners may again be hard to find. Korokio is gallojiing- well and will take a lot of heating in the Debutante Stakes. Luminary and Avro are a likely pair for flic -Gonville Hurdles. Of a large field engaged in the Spring Hack, Pomp (who, was unlucky yesterday) and -Brilliant -Light should run prominently. After his fine performance yesterday it will come as a surprise should Laughing Prince not extend Toxetima in the Eclipse -Stakes. Of a promising lot in the- Trial Handicap the I hrco-year-ohls Arisus, Vandyke and Imamint may do best. Quito a useful lot will contest the Higgio Handicap, and the Kemhall bracket (Hymanna and -Courageous) or Mend-ip may give most trouble. The 'Warden was unlucky yesterday , as iw-asi Annoyer and both should do well in the Moutoa Hack. Arrow Lad, Fernden and Aeora are a likely trio for the Owen Handicap.
