NO MAU MOVEMENT

SITUATION TN SAMOA. QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. Mr C. Can* asked in the House of Representatives recently for details of the present position in Samoa. The Acting Prime Minister replied that the Samoa military police as such bad been disbanded in April, 1929, and replaced by the Samoa- constabulary. There were no concentrations of the Mau and no other signs of Man activity. Passive resistance was rapidly diminishing. “We are- advised by the Administrator,” continued the reply, “that foi*all practical purposes there is at present no Mau movement in the territory, and I trust that this encouraging situation will he- allowed to develop.

“Si nee the United Government took office there have been no ‘banishments’ and no person has been imprisoned except- by the due process of the law after fair trial with the right of representation by counsel. No- Samoan has been subject to, a ‘banishment’ order during the past two years, and no such order has been made since 1927. The following Samoans are, however, still serving sentences of imprisonment imposed b-v the High Court in respect of the offences indicated : Offences against the maintenance of authority in native affairs ordinance, 5.; offences against Samoa- seditious organisations regulations, 7. No Samoan woman has ever been subject to a ‘banishment’ order and no Samoan woman is in prison.”
