POSITION OF PETROL TAX
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANG ARE!, Aug. 5
Speaking at a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last- night, Hon. A. J. Murdoch explained the Government’s proposals regarding the petio! tax. Ho said that the Consolidated Fund had no money wherewith to continue its annual grant of £235,000 to the Main Highway Fund. The petrol tax was the only alternative, _ which Parliament could approve- or reject as it liked. - Mr Murdoch stated definitely that there was no intention of cutting out the subsidy on local body rates-, and he did not think that the proposal to change the interest on transfers from the Consolidated Fund would be adopted.
