■GOVERNMENT’S ASSISTANCE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 29. The Government has decided to make provision for a. definite scheme of fruit research, and Cabinet recently approved of a grant, which, with assistance from the Fruit Export Control Board and the Empire Marketing Board, will enable an orchard property of 72 acres near Nelson to be acquired. The area will be vested in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the Horticultural Division of the Agriculture Department and the Cawthorn Institute will now be able to conduct and extend their field investigations in cooperation in the centre of an important fruit-growing area. The orchard will also be available for instruction for officers of the Horticultural Division.
The Fruit Growers’ Marketing Board has a grant of £IW for the actual maintenance of research work for five years, and this will be subsidised on a pound per pound basis by the Government. The fruit research committee has already prepared a scheme of investigation. The cool storage investigations of the Cawthorn Institute and the fruit research committee on vessels is also to he extended in co-operation with the Cambridge low temperature research station, and the necessary scientific assistance to fruit-growers tn enabe them to overcome insect and other pests and general orchard management will be provided.
