RAISING OF PIGS
BETUBX OF to PE 11 COW. Tn the course of a report to tlio Bovs and Ciii'ls’ Clubs at Fcildmg last week, an. croericnecd fanner stated as follows: “Pi"s under proper conditions are eanable of producing a return of up to £o nor cow where skim-milk is used as a basic diet, and about one-lmlt this sum where whey replaces skim-milk. This return is obtained by having clean and di v housing conditions feed in" a little grain judiciously (about fi nor cent of the total turnover), lookin" after sows before farrowing, gi' - in" due consideration to correct farrow dates, Iniying no store pigs, and selling only fat stock, mostly as pork. * f Sl\iin-niilie find wlioy iiy tlicmson os form good basic diets for nigs, but aie eery greatlv improved by the addition ■)!’ concentrates in the form of gram or .neat-meals. The use of bib of meatmeal per dav for sows and stoics in winter would make it profitable to have two litters per year, and to cany ■stores through the winter on present feeds in a thriving condition that would avoid present losses and give a quick return for the early milk. ’ Conch’,sions arrived at bv Mr M. I . I Scott. B. A.. B.Se.. A.T.C.. of CanterI bury' Agricultural College, on the sub- | ject of nig-feeding. upon which he fully reports, are summarised as under: “(11 The use of bib of meat-meal per oig per day in winter will make profitable. (2) Tf winter feeding were practised it would be possible to get two litters per sow each vear and effect a saving in feed. (3) Everv feed is as valuable as the feeder oil make it. Feeding plenty of it to growing animals is better than keeping them in store condition. (4) Management- is one of the most important factors in getting the best returns from feeds. Xew Zealand farmers would do well, to get away from Old Country ,practice and tlieir recommended meal-mixtures. These can he used in Great Britain .because of higher prices of pork obtainable there. A''farmer should‘keep such records: a-s will enable him to lind out liilivse.il which feeds can be used profitably.”
