USE OF LIME
“In connection with soil amendment and soil fertilisation, the question of applying lime to the cultivable and pastoral lands of the Dominion should receive far greater consideration in the future than it has in the past. It is a question which farmers must consider seriously in view of the gradual extraction of lime from the soil, ’ remarked Dr. D. L. Freeman, of the Department of Agriculture, Hastings, m the course of conversation -on this subject, which he regards as a most important one, characterising lime as “the king of soil improvers.” Lime was a plant food. An ordinary farm plant could not mature if lime was absent. Apart from being an essential plant food, it would release other plant foods in tbe soil. Tt was accepted that it facilitated the liherationsof nitrogen and potash, and was also useful in regard to phosphates.
