The new Governor of New South Wales, Sir Phillip Game, Lady Game and their three children and suite arrived at Sydney by the Moldavia yesterday morning. Warships and merchantmen in the harbour were boflagged and H.M.A.S. Australia fired a salute. Sir Phillip was later sworn in. He was cordially welcomed by the Premier and Ministers.

Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, .DirectorGeneral of Health was a visitor _to Hawera last evening in connection with hospital administration, and left this morning for Wanganui. It is officially stated- that Sir Joseph Ward had a dTightly better day yesterday.

Miss Leah Haugton, formerly of Hawera.,' and now of Wellington, lias arrived in Hawera to take part in the Misses Reilly’s concert next week.

Mr. R. H. Scott, of Whakamara, has returned from Waitara, where he acted as judge of the dog trials. Mr. and Mrs. S. Buckrell, of Wliakamara, who have been in Masterton, have returned to their home.

Mr Edwin Payne, of Hawera, who today presided at the final meeting of the Hawera. County Electric Light Company, was one of the. provisional directors when the company was formed in 1902. The following year he was elected to the first board of directors and from 1905 until the dissolution of the company he officiated as- chairman of directors.

Captain W. McConechy, master ot the Canadian National Steamships’ vessel Canadian Conqueror, died at Timaru yesterday morning. The chief officer. Mr. J. Newhook, has assumed command of the vessel. The late Captain McConechy had been in ill-health for a considerable time. Mr. W. L. Lowrie, American ConsulGeneral to New Zealand, and Mrs. Lowrie will leave to-morrow for the United’ States, via Panama, by the Mataroa, on four months’ leave of absence.

The indifferent health of the Premier of New South Wales, Mr T. R. Bavin, is causing his friends some anxiety, says a Sydney cablegram. He will undergo an operation on June 14. There is some doubt as to whether lie will be able to lead the Government forces during the next State election in October. The death of Commodore William Marshall, C. 8., D. 5.0., aged 57, of the White Star Line, is reported by cable from London. He commanded the Majestic when ho retired in 1928. He was captain of the Afric, which carried troops from Australia to Egypt when the Emden was defeated by H.A.M.S. Sydney, one of the escort.

The death of Mr Victor Murray is reported by the Press Association from Auckland. Mr Murray, who was 74 years of age, was a director of the South British Insurance Company. The death is reported from Wellington of Mr W. C. Chatfield, aged 79, formerly one of Wellington’s leading architects. He arrived in the early ’sixties and was founder and first president of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

The appointment of Mr F. C. Chichester as a flight lieutenant iff the New Zealand Air Force is gazetted, states a Press Association telegram from Wellington. The opportunity ivvas taken at the Hawera Tennis Chib’s bridge, evening at the Savoy tea-rooms last evening to farewell Mr 11. Wiggins, a popular club member, who has received notice of his transfer as senior officer of the Kaik’ohe (North Auckland) Post Office. On behalf of the club, Mr R. H. Leecr. presented Mr Wiggins with a leather suitcase and expressed, the general regret felt at his impending departure. Reference was made to Mr Wiggins’ popularity and ability on the courts, and also to the courteous manner in which his official duties were fulfilled. Mr Wiggins suitably responded.
