HAWERA CIVIC AFFAIRS
WORK OF ADMINISTRATION. MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Hawera Borough Council held its first meeting for the Nejy Year last evening, the Mayor (Mr E. A. Pacey) presiding. Also present were: Crs, \Y. G. Simpson, A. K. Fyson, J. M. Townsend, G. J. Bayley, A. K. North, A. Reid, W. G. Strange and E. Morrissey. An apology for absence was received from Cr. W. G. Walkley. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The borough engineer (Mr J. Sturrock) submitted the following report Tlie work of patching, etc., on the njain highways has been completed and an account for £2 per £1 will now be sent in to the board. Waihi Road lias been widened from High Street to the junction of the portion controlled by the county council. The final cost is pot to hand at date, but it is much less than the estimate. At the date of the estimate it seemed as if considerable tearing up of the old road might be required before widening. However, it was found possible to obviate this and to keep thp cost down. A thorough test will be made of the flame thrower now that the ground is dry enough to permit of economy in its use.. Princes Street flanks at the South Road end are now being put down in metal and bitumen. We have been trying to get extra horses for hire, but without much success so far. I think that we may have to hire a motor lorry for a week or two to help us through the summer programme. For handling big quantities of stuff on steady runs they are, of course, economical, if not so for intermittent work such as our rubbish collection.—‘Adopted. FINANCIAL STATEMENT.
