BOWLING

PARK CLUB. BUSY WORK ON GREEN. The past week has been a busy one on the Hawera Park Club’s green and, in addition to tiie shield match against Patea on Saturday last, inteiest has been very keen in the club competitions and inter-club Cann Crip matches. On Friday evening last a Park rink was successful in a challenge against Hawera for the Cann (No- 1) Cup. The game was particularly close all through and the margin of two points in favour of Park is a fair indication of the whole game. The scores. were: McLaren, Yillars, Smith, Goodwin (Park) 20 v.’ Champion, Maslin, Adamson, Squire (Hawera) 18. During the week end Park successfully defended the Gann (No. 2) Cup from a challenge by a Hawera rink. Park early established a good lead and Hawera were, never in the picture. The scores read': McLaren, Thurston, Chadwick. Goodwin (Park) 85 v. Canning, Dahl, Maslin, Kendall (Hawera) 15.

The house-and-liouse brooches again [changed hands during the week-end when the Mercers were unable to hold them against a rink composed of excricketers. The game was full of interest and although Cdlman established an early lead Smith played great bowls and caught the cricketers by all but one point on the 24th head. Here Column played the shot of a lifetime, and turned apparent defeat- by one point into a win by six. The scores were: Neilson, W. Thomas, Macliin, Col man (cricketers) 28 v. Brennan, Huntingdon, Bremford, Smith 22. So far only one game has been played in the club’s handicap pairs and resulted in a win for Grant and Colman against Macliin and Mason 28—14. LADIES AT WANGANUI

What is probably a, unique e7ent in New Zealand took place when a rink of Canadian lady bowlers tried conclusions with a. ladies’ team from Wanganui. Canada’s team comprised Mrs W. Cowan (Toronto), Mrs .0. Bowden (Vancouver),' Mrs Day (Vancouver), Mrs J. A. L„ McPherson (Toronto) skip. The Wanganui ladies’ team comprised Mrs T. Brown (Rap_anui), Mrs F. Cunningham (St. John’s), Mrs Johnson (Rapanui), Mrs. A. H. Handley (Rapanui), skip. The game was the most popular of any game played on Saturday, buite a large “gallery” following each shot with great interest. The final score was 19 —15 in favour of Wanganui.

DOMINION TOURNEY

SIXTH ROUND RESULTS. ‘ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 21. This morning the Dominion bowling tourney was devoted to making up leeway in the links occasioned by the rain. NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. At a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Bowling Association on Saturday night 'it was resolved that, in view of the small number of entries for the Dominion tournament, the annual meeting of the council should investigate in full tliei following points which, in the opinion of the council had a bearing on the matter of entries : (1) Alteration of the date of the tournament; (2) system of play and programme generally; and (3) effect of local toumameilts on the Dominion tournament.

The president (Mr. C. J. Paytie) expressed the opinion that the t urnament ban been bold too early this year; February would have been more suitable. Tie thought also that the tom namenta were far too long. The programme should be confined to rinks onlv. The rink championship was the

main feature of the tournament, and attracted the greatest number of players.

CANADIANS’ TOUR

.ARRIVAL IN WELLINGTON

WELLINGTON, Jan. 21. A warm welcome on behalf of the people of New Zealand was extended to the Canadian bowlers a.t a. Government reception at Parliament House to-day.

Hon. G. W. Forbes expressed regret at the absence of the "Premier (Sir Joseph Ward), who had asked him to convey his personal good wishes as well as the good wishes of the people of the Dominion.

Hon. Mr Forbes expressed the hope tjiat the team would go away with a good impression of the Dominion. He referred to the appointment of Mr Collins as trade commissioner in Canada, and described him as a man who was fully alive to the possibilities of increased trade between the two countries. Dr. Weston Drupp replied.
