STEAMING SOUTH

POLAR EXPLORATION DISCOVERY’S VOYAGE. STARTLING SEA CONTRASTS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyxigbt.) Received 12 noon to-day. SYDNEY, Jan. IC.

A despatch from the Sir Douglas Ma-wison expedition states that during gloriously clear, calm evening hours on 'January 6 the Discovery steamed southwest through loose pack-ice towards •the coast on which it is hoped to effect a landing. Passing floes bearing curious denizens of these regions were mirrored by tlie placid waters. They made a fascinating midnight scene. A few hours later meteorological chaos reigned.

A fierce blizzard came down suddenly from the land slopes, but fortunately 'there was open water nearby and into This the ship was steered and rode out •the fury of the storm, though passing bergs, looming like spectres through the drifting snow, several times narrowly missed the ship. The wind which reached a velocity of 70 miles hourly and averaged 50 during the 1 gale died down the next day.
