DOMINION CONFERENCE. FRUIT DEMAND INCREASING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. The annual conference of the Horticultural Trades Association was opened to-day by the Agricultural Minister, tlie Hon. G. W. Forbes. A civic welcome was extended by Mr Luckie, deputy-Mayor, and addresses were made by Mr C. M. Smith, representing tlie Wellington Acclimatisation Society, and the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Commissioner of State Forests, and Mr L. O. H. Tripp, and Messrs J. A'. Nash, R. McKeen and D. McDougall, members of Parliament. Messrs J. N. McLeod and T. Waugh replied on behalf of the conference.

The president, Mr V. C. Davies, said the demand for apples overseas had induced a moderate amount of new planting. He understood peaches and other stone fruits had been in good demand. There had been a decline in the demand for shelter and forest trees. He stressed the need of urging on the State the necessity of an extensive tree-planting campaign. It was hoped the Government would bring down a BUI to' remove some of the anomalies affecting florists.
