Surprise is manifested at the directors of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce passing a resolution in favour of the retention of excise and import duties, on .the ground of the fear of a disturbance of them hampering the development of the trades concerned. It is recalled that the chamber strongly opposed the- artificial silk duties when imposed by Air Churchill’s 1920 Budget. The Midland branch of the National Union of Manufacturers passed a resolution in favour of Empire free trade. Air Leslie Boyce, ALP., who is an Australian, said the most important task of'the country was to bring about economic union with the Dominions.
