(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHAKATANE, Jan. 15. A block of wooden buildings at Taneatna, comprising five shops, a billiard room and two attached dwelling quarters, was totally destroyed by fire at daybreak this morning. The buildings were owned by J. K. Franks and were insured for an amount not at present ascertainable. McPeake Bros.’ stationers stock was insured for £I4OO. H. McGoughan (confectioner) had £250 on his stock, A C. T. Winkleniaii (chemist) £4OO oii stock and V. Mead (grocer) £6OO on stock. J. Hogg (hairdresser and tobacconist) and Bercinist (billiard saloon) were not insured. The dwelling quarters were occupied by H. McGmighan and A. C. T. Winklemait. The contents were net insured. One shop was vacant. Tjie fire apparently started at the rear of Mead’s grocery shop ami had a strong hold when discovered. There were no fire lighting appliances, watoi supply or fire alarm in the township. The north-easterly wind of the previous evening had died away ; otherwise the fire would have swept the whole side of the streetConstable McDonnell organised a party and demolished a shed, thus preventing the fire from spreading to a tailor’s shop and the Union Bank adjoining. . ....... . - ■
