TWO LABOUR PEERS MANY FRESH KNIGHTS RECOGNITION OF SERVICES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Jan. I. Tiie list of New Year honours includes new peerages, which are conlerred upon cue following: Major Dudley Lilian, who unsuccessfully ooiitesteii ju'aversliain for the La bom- Party at the general election; Sir Willoughby DicKinson, who was formerly a Liberal member of London County Council, and who is honorary secretary of the World Alliance for the Promotion of International Friendship through Churches, and has been closely identified! with the League of Nations Union; Sir William Noble, ex-presi-dent of the Chamber of Shipping; Mr Arthur Ponsonby Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the Labour Government of 1924, and now Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport; Sir Hugh Trenchard, Air Marshal, and Sir Charles Wakefield, who lias done much for aviation. There is one new Privy Councillor. Viscount Goschen, lately Governor of Madras.

The new baronets include Sir Lopts Bernard Baron, son of the late Mr Bernhard 1 Baron, the millionaire tobacco magnate, for public and philanthropic services; Sir Gregory Foster, recently Vice-Chancellor of London University; and Sir Eustace Tenny-son-D’Eynoourt, formerly Director of Naval Construction.

Among the new Knights are Sir Nigel Davidson, Legal Secretary to the Sudan Government; Sir Archibald Flower, chairman of the governors of the Shakespeare National Memorial Xih.Qat.re, Stratford.-on-A.'von. j Sir Jolm Ritchie, chief inspector of Customs and Excise ; and Sir Frederick Wall, secretary of the Football Association. Other honours include the fallowing : —.

Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Knights of the Grand Cross. — Sir Joseph Ward, Prime Minister of New Zealand; Sir Horace Byatt, lately Governor of Trinidad l ; and Sir Malooijn Robertson, lately Ambassador at Buenos Aires.

BY-FLECTION NECESSARY. RUGBY, Jan. 1. The elevation to the Peerage of Mr Arthur Ponsonby, Labour member for Brightside, Sheffield, causes a vacancy,, necessitating a by-election. At the last election Mr Ponsonby had a majority of over 10,000 in a three-oomered contest.
