PATEA.
PROGRESS LEAGUE A representative meeting of the Patea Progress League was held this week, the Mayor. Mr- E. Ramsbottom, Roots, Gilbert, Thompson, Waimv right, Williams, Locker and Clark were present. The secretary, Mr. E. F. Hemingway, reported with regard to the proposal to inaugurate a direct shipping service between Patea and South Island ports that the chambers of commerce throughout the South Taranaki district have been writing, but one reply only, from Stratford, had yet come to hand. The Domain Board’s action in offering the Patea Domain as a children’s health camp site evoked favourable comment -and the meeting unanimously endorsed Mr. Hemingway’s initiative and the board’s progressive policy and generosity. An interesting paper was read by Mr. Thompson, giving illuminating figures on the highly speculative nature of house building. The fact of the present acute housing shortage in Patea made the information doubly interesting. Mr. Locker stated that 13 families were waiting to occupy houses, adding that many of these were prepared to purchase on the rent installment principle if houses could ho erected. A vote of thanks was passed Lo Messrs. Thompson and Locker for their papers.
A discussion regarding leases and the difficulties besetting the path of the prospective . home buidler took place. The possibility of the domain’s up-to-date sheds, grounds* and conveniences, together with the open country beyond as a military camp site was stressed by several speakers. CROQUET CLUBOPENING OF SEASON. The opening ceremony took place on the Patea Croquet Club’s new' lawns this week, before a good attendance of players and visitors. The Mayor, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, performed the ceremony, and congratulated; the club on its gdod work. The president, Mr. O. Horner, said the result of the club’s endeavour was largely due to> the activities of the expresident. Mrs. F. "Ramsbottom, and the ex-secretary, Mrs S. Masters. B.v means of euchre parties these ladies had raised £3O towards the cost of the project. Mrs. Ramsbottom Avas then asked to drive the first ball, and Mrs. C. Masters the second, oil the new lawns.
Competitions were held: the results of the games being:—Ring •the' Bell.—Senior: Mrs. J. Dwyer, Avitb a possible. Junior: Mrs. M. Carey.
Angles..—Senior: Mrs. C: Masters. Junior: Mr Ramsbottom. Skittles. —Senior: Mr. O. Horner. Junior': Mrs. E. PappsFlat Target. Mrs. Ifaswell. Junior: Mrs. Quiekendew. Tlie afternoori was a great mi cess, Targelv- due to the efforts of tlie joint secretaries, Mrs. Dwyer and Mrs. T. Kelson.
AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB. EVENING SPORTS. The Patea Amateur Athletic Clufy commenced its summer activities in the Patea Domain, on Wednesday. The track was in exellent condition, and every prospect of successful 'Wednesday sprints was evidenced. The duties of handicap per and starter were in the hands of Mr. C. GardinerPreliminary heats Avere run at 7 p.m. being followed by’ the finals, duxing which keen excitement prevailed. The results were:— 100 Yards.—G. Thompson, 1; R. Adams, 2; D. Paterson, 3. Ten started. One Mile—G. Fraser, 1; B. Currie, 2: E Cousins, 3. Eight started.
