*- The “Northern Advocate’’ learns on good authority from a reliable source that when the reshuffling of Cabinet’« cards happens in the near future' the Senior Government Whip, Mr A. J. Murdoch, member for Marsden, is almost certain to be given a portfolio. Thomas Barrett, aged 43, ‘a confectioner, was fined £3O in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court yesterday for bookmaking. The alternative is. two months’ imprisonment. The magistrate refused to allow time to pay.
The Minister of Labour has notified the Town Clerk that authority has been granted for the holding of the weekly half-holiday in Hawera on Thursday of next week (People’s Day at the show) instead of Wednesday. Fire at Greymouth yesterday afternoon demolished a seven-roomed house owned and occupied by George Weaver, of Marsden Road. The occupants were absent- when the fire started and a southerly wind, coupled with rather low water pressure, prevented salvage. The insurance was £BOO on the house and £2OO on the furniture. A, motor agent named; S. Keith collided with a, motor car driven by Mr W. Smith at a bend in the Rawhitiroa Road, Eltham, yesterday afternoon. Mr Keith received several nasty cuts and other injuries, which necessitated, his removal to the Hawera Hospital. His motor cycle was also badly damaged. The ear was not tseriously damaged.
Rudolph Milesi, fanner, of Mangatoki, pleaded 'guilty at the Eltham Police Court this morning, before Messrs J. W. Stubbs and I. J. Bridger, Justices of the Peace, to a charge or being drunk while in charge of a motor-car. Defendant, who was represented by Mr. A. Chrystall, was fined £ls, and, on his own consent, a prohibition order for twelve months was issued against him. Flying an Air Force Moth ’plane from Hobsonville, Auckland, to the air pageant, being held at Wellington today, Major L. M. Isitt, accompanied by Captain S. Wallingford, alighted on the Hawera Aero Club’s ground shortly before 9.30 o’clock this, morning. Head winds and rain squalls were encountered and the hop from Hobsonville acoupied three and a half hours. The visitors. were entertained with refreshments at the 'residence, of Mr and Mrs J. Dunlop, and after re-filling the petrol tanks left shortly after IQ o’clock to resume the. flight to 'Wellington.
The annual meeting of the Oeo Tennis Club was, held in the Hall on Thursday night, Mr T. G. Mitchell presiding. The chairman congratulated the club on the satisfactory financial state as disclosed by the balance sheet. The following committee were elected : Mr Mitchell (chairman). Air Roy Hughes (secretary), Frank Simpson, Misses L. Be van and A. Hughes. It was decided to open the court on Wednesday 20th inst., when afternoon tea will be dispensed. The committee will be pleased to see visitors present at the opening. It was also arranged to hold a, grand tennis dance at an early date.
The quarterly meeting of the Public Service Superannuation Board was held at Wellington yesterday, Mr. J. W. McDonald presiding. Twenty-five contributors retired by reason of age or length of service were granted allowances totalling £6193 per annum, and jive contributors retired as medically unfit were granted allowances totalling £522 per annum. An application for an additional allowance on account of retirement through injuries received whilst on police duty was refused. Thirty-four widows and 30 children were granted statutory allowances amounting to £1834 per annum.
