GOOD PROSPECTS IN POVERTY BAY. OPENING RATES FOB LAMB. ■Freezing works managements ip Poverty Bay are looking forward to a fairly " satisfactory season so far as; total" killings are concerned, but prices are expected to be a great <;leal lower than they were last year. In view of the uncertainty of the; markets this year, producers appear to be keener than .ev.er to ascertain the: Opening prices, but to date no official schedule of rates has been published. It was learned in Gisborne, although not- from a direct source, that the opening price for lambs ih Hawke's Bay: was 8d per lb for first-grade lambs 361 b and under- This is -2d per lb below the opening; rates for last year, representing It is pointed out that the figure quoted as the opening rate for this season may; be a fictitious ope, which may not last beyond the -first shipment; it may have: been offered in order to induce heavier, offerings of lambs for the first consignment for the Christmas market. In any case, under ordinary circumstances the values often drop after December.
