A London message reports that Mr Bernard Shaw has been elected a life member of the Institute of Journalists. Captain Christopher C. Welch celebrated' his hundredth birthday at Pt. Chalmers to-day, says a> Press Association message from Dunedin. The chairman of the Harbour Board called and made a. presentation on behalf of the board and: master mariners and prevented a cheque. Captain Welch, who retired from the sea. 19 years ago, came to Pt. Cahners in 1862 in his own schooner, carrying 488 diggers for Gahriti’s Gully gold rush. He lias had an adventurous career in all parts of the world.
