PLANE HIT BY LIGHTNING. CRASHES IN A DESERT. FIVE PASSENGERS KILLED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) NEW YORK, Sept. 4. News from Gallup, New .Mexico, states that the Great Trans-Contin-ental Air Transport Company’s plane City of San Francisco, which was missing since early yesterday, was struck by lightning south of that place and crashed on the desert when trying to cross the mountains. The ’plane contained live passengers, most of whom were prominent in various circles, and thi'ee members of a crew. A report indicates that all were killed. FAMOUS PILOT CRASHES. ’PLANE EXPLODES IN STORM. NEW YORK, Sept. 4. Major John P. AYood, famed airmail pilot and air-transport executive, who was attempting to lower the record between Los Angeles and Cleveland, was killed when his monoplane exploded in the air. His mechanic jumped in a parachute and escaped with injuries, but Wood's mangled body was found in the tangled wreckage on the desert to-day. The mechanic stated that he believed lightning struck the ’piano in an exceptionally severe storm.
