COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL.
REC ORD SEASON CONCLUDED. * THE FINAL AWARDS. .J UDG ES’ COMPLIMENTAR V REMARKS. After a record season, the Hawera competitions festival concluded at the Opera House last night when there was another large attendance.. When giving their awards, appreciation was expressed by the judges of the excellent standard attained by the competitions, also of the efficient manner in which the festival had been conducted. The musical judge, Mr. Moss, said that he had no hesitation in saying that at no competitions where he had judged, had the arrangements been, better, and his work had been greatly expedited and {lightened by the thoroughness of the organisation and by the attention to detail on the part of the secretary and his staff. This opinion was endorsed by the other judges. The awards for the scholarships annually given by the society were ars follow : Vocal music*.- —-Miss Doris Gilmore (Hawera). Instrumental music.—Rav Downey (Hawera). Elocution. —Veronica. Quin (Hawera). These scholarships are- of the A T alue of £lO 10s each and are given to competitors who, in the opinion of the judges, are showing most promise in their work.
Each of the judges expressed their thanks for the many kindnesses shown them during their stay in Hawera and said they had spent a most enjoyable and happy time in the town. _ They thanked all the officials, chairman, committee, stage managers, and secretary for their, assistance Mr. Moss and Mr. Walker both gave items at- the end of the programme and' were warmly applauded and recalled.
The president (Mr. E. Dixon) referred to the great responsibility assumed by the executive, the sum needed to cover expenses being over £3OO, and foe added that the town and district were much indebted to the work of Mr. Horner and his committee.' In some concluding remarks Mr. Horner expressed the thanks of the committee to the public for great support accorded throughout the season, to the performers in the various sections, to the judges for their advice and the interest taken in the competitors, to the teachers who prepared pupils and thus co-operated with the judges in elevating, the standard of art in the district, to their official acoompaniste, Mrs. McQuin, for her excellent services, to Piper Haddon, official piper, to the lion secretary, Mr. T. F. McKenzie, who has given splendid service in making things run smoothly, to Mr. Velvin, Mrs. Velvin and Mr. Findlater, who spent part of their holiday giving assistance, and very many other voluntary helpers, and to the Press who had given consistent and valued help at all times.

J UDGES ’ REMARKS. In awarding the scholarships, Mr Walker and Mr Moss both said they had watched carefully the progress of the competitors through the whole festival, and were satisfied that those young artists selected, would go a long way in their art. They wished- them success,- and complimented them on the- honour t-hev had -secured.
When speaking on the work in the dancing sections, Miss Gibbs said that the judges were always out. to raise the standard of performance, and stressed more the faults they found so that these -might be eliminated and so better results be secured. JUDGES ENTERTAINED.
After the festival had concluded the chairman and members of the- executive and the president of the Male Choir, entertained the judges, whose healths were proposed in a happy speech by Mr A. E. Morris, and the toast accorded musical honours. Mr Morris complimented them all on their good work, and said that one of the essentials of -success was the securing of competent judges so as to maintain and gradually raise- the standard of performance Eacli of the judges replied, congratulating the socity on - its success and remarking upon the very efficient way in which the festival had been run. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne’’ concluded a happy gathering.
Inadvertently the name of Miss [Margaret Lawrence appeared as a competitor in the Sword Dance and Highland Reel on Friday. Her name appeared on the programme, but she was unable to compete
