UNDERWORLD VENDETTA.
AMAZING SIDELIGHTS REVEALED.
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, Aug. 16. Amazing sidelights on the underworld vendetta were revealed at the coroner’s inquiry to-day into the death of a gunman, George Gaffney, who was fatally shot- outside the home of James Devine at Marouhra at midnight on July 16. Gaffney had, according to the evidence, previously shot Frank Green, and expressed his intention of carrying the feud to the hitter end. Devine, on whose behalf a plea of justifiable homicide was made by his solicitor to-day. was committed for trial in September on a charge of murdering Gaffney. Four men were shot in the affray, which the police believe was a continuation of the gang warfare by members of the underworld. George Gaffney was shot- right through the body, and died. Two others were treated in the hospital, hut refused to give an account of the affray. The police state that four or five men attacked a house, hut one of the defenders used an army service rifle with deadly effect.
